Exploring the Web
Starting Off
The Web gives us an opportunity to share information and resources school-wide, district-wide, and even internationally. Here are some of our tips on exploring the Web through the links on our school website. Feel free to get lost in exploring. Just be sure to cut and paste the address onto your wiki webpage so that you and your students can access the sites again.
Math Links
Take some time to explore the links on the Math Links page of our school website. Here are some favorite sites and pages.
Did you know that the Harcourt Brace math series has an award winning website? You can use Andrews as a password; any author from the textbook would work. Try out That's a Fact, an time online basic math facts test. The E-Labs are also great tools for class. They coincide with chapters in the textbook and come with recording sheets that the students can use to document their learnng.
Another great site that covers skills for many grade levels is Mrs. Renz Fourth Grade Math Site. One of my students favorite games within this site is what my students call multiplication bingo. Another simple but fun game students enjoy is Batter's Up Multiplication Baseball. A simple exercise in rounding is good for the 2nd and 3rd graders. These are some examples that children find fun while practicing their math skills.
Another fun link from the fabulous Sunset Ridge Website is Elementary Math. Here, there is a game for many grade levels called math magician where you will find timed tests for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Language Arts Links
Our Houghton Mifflin Reading series also has a website. One nice feature of this site are the extension activities in each grade level for each theme. Quiz Show is a fun idea that could be used across all grade levels in our language arts curriculum. There is also a nice link to meet the authors that could be used as examples when our students are writing up their own "meet the author" for writing workshop.
All grades can use this search engine from Google specifically designed for children to find safe websites on the topics they are searching for. Take a moment and give Google for kids a try and see what you find. You will also find other great websites for students to research on our Research Links at the awesome Sunset Ridge Website.
To supplement our schoolwide subscription to Time for Kids, students can find more at Time For Kids Online Magazine. One fun activity that uses visual and language skills is called Mag-o-matic. Of course another great feature of this website is that there is a lot of reading that your students can choose from. They can read what other students have written about in Kidscoops, or the world, national, animal and science new at TFK news.
NASA for Kids is a great website for many things. You can have students find great non- fiction reading at News for Kids. There are also great science activity pages for your students among other things to find on this website.
The last recommended language arts website is Brainpop. This website offers free language arts videos that are entertaining and informative for students on many levels. A teacher or school may also pay a fee and access the full range of video's if they would like.
Teacher Resource Links
The web doesn't just offer great resources for students, it also offers many tools to help make your job easier. Visit our school Teacher Resource link. These sites provide a variety teacher resources from assessment tools and rubrics to lessons plans and curriculum information. Explore sites from each section and be sure to add your favorites to your own website.
Here are some favorites:
Check out the 4Teachers link. At this site you will find great Tools for Teachers links. The Classroom Architect link helps you reconfigure your classroom before you lift any furniture. This is also a great way to create class map. Trackstar is one of my favorite time-saving links. This site helps you find educational websites by topic. Try it!
Discovery School is another great website that has wonderful teacher tools and links. Browse the side bar and visit the Clip Art Gallery to help spice up your web page or a newsletter. Another favorite is Puzzle Maker which creates word searches, hidden messages, and math squares. All you need to do is provide the content and Puzzle Maker will provide the fun. Kathy Schrock's Guide for Educators is another link that is great in keeping you updated monthly with new places to visit on the Web.
What next?
Explore. Get lost in all the possibilities out there. All you need to find your way is the web address. Be sure to keep track of great sites.
