Online Assignment #1:  Chinese New Year

We recently read Chapter 1 of In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson, written by Bette Bao Lord and Marc Simont.  This online assignment will give you an opportunity to find out more about Chinese New Year, especially since this year is the year of the Boar (Pig).  Simply follow the steps of this assignment and you will have an opportunity to explore Chinese New Year and better understand why Chinese New Year was so important to Bandit and her family.  Finish as many of these tasks as you can during our computer lab time.

Task #1:  Go to the Time For Kids website and read It's the year of the Pig!  In your notebook, list two facts and one opinion about this article.

Task #2:  Go to the Sunset Ridge Research Links page.  Look up Chinese New Year on any of the research sites.  Find at least two new facts that you didn't already know about Chinese New Year.  Write these two facts in your notebook.

Task #3:  Go to Countdown to the New Year to play Chinese New Year's games with Sagwa.  In your notebook, tell me what your favorite game was and what it taught you about Chinese New Year.

Task #4:  Write a reflection about what you learned.  Be sure to title your reflection Online Assignment #1.  You have three options of where to write your reflection:

    1.  Write in your notebook.

    2.  Create a Word document and print it out before the end of class.

    3.  Go to SurveyMonkey and enter your notebook answers for Online Assignment #1.

If you still have more time:  Try these challenging tangrams.  Tangrams are seven piece puzzles that originated in China.
