Cyber Safety

Take a look at this cyber safety poster.  It's our responsibility as educators to teach students about internet safety.

Create an Online Assignment

Now that you have some useful sites that your you want your students to use, the best way to direct them to that site is by creating an online assignment.  Although this sounds challenging, it is as easy as writing an assignment using a Word document.  The benefit of having it online is that you can use hyperlinks that automatically direct your students to appropriate sites.  Here are some sample assignment webpages for each grade level.   If you want to use any of these templates, highlight the writing, copy it, and paste it into an open page you are trying to edit.

1.  2nd grade Example Assignment

2.  3rd Grade Example Assignment

3.  Fourth Grade Example Assignment

4.  Fifth Grade Example Assignment

Going Public

Once your page is set up the way you want it to be, your students will be able to access it in a couple of ways:

1.  You can give your students your web address (i.e., http://sunsetridge.pbwiki.com ).

2.  You can have Joy add your webpage to the classroom webpages already on our school website.

3.  You can add your pbwiki site as a link on an already existing classrooom webpage.

Another Step Further

Once you get the hang of creating one page, here are some other pbwiki possibilities:

1.  You can create additional pages and link them by editing the side bar (located on the upper right hand side of each page).

2.  You can add pictures, clipart and emoticons.

3.  You can insert plugins -- videos, slide shows, and google gadgets.

4.  You can upload attachments like videos and word documents.

5.  You can use templates and skins to change the appearance of your wiki.

Getting the Wiki out of your Wiki

The true power of a wiki comes from the ability for users to add and edit content collectively.  Here are some ideas of how you can use your wiki.

1.  You can create a grade level wiki that all teachers access to contribute and edit assignments or web links that they like.  Each teacher could have their own page that they could edit.

2.  You can have a classroom wiki in which each student has their own page where they can post their own work using the classroom password.

3.  You can use the easy editing ability to add content and edit information on your wiki from your home computer.

4.  Check out the example classroom websites on the side bar.

On Your Own

Remember, in a cyberworld, you are never really alone.  Have fun.  Explore.  Find out what other educators are doing on the Web.  If you have any questions or what some help with bringing the Web to your class, John and Joy are always here to help you.
